Very few artists have the privilege to immerse themselves into indigenous Australian culture, so Evert was incredibly honoured when he was invited to travel and spend time to paint a portrait of Ngarluma Elder – Tim Douglas, in his ‘Country’ Ieramugadu  (Roebourne) in Western Australia, Pilbara in early 2019

Tim is a traditional man and Evert kept that manner in the portrait, with the dark background and simple tonal shirt, we focus on his face, as a cultural elder and the holder of many traditional ‘songs’ and stories. Tim Douglas is known as the Bundul Boss.

Evert was able to create this portrait on location in Tim’s country and with the involvement of his family, producing the portrait from multiple sittings, revisiting painted passages and hunting for form from life, all contributing to building a patina of layers, which so mirror’s Tim’s life.

Evert is deeply grateful to the private funders and BighArt for facilitating the process.
